OPMI LUMERA 700 from Carl Zeiss Meditec Receives Design Award
JENA, 03.05.2010. – A red dot award for high design quality now also adorns the OPMI® LUMERA 700 surgical microscope. The 30-member international jury has honored both the excellent conception and outstanding design of this leading edge surgical microscope for ophthalmology.
In addition to the assessment criteria of innovativeness, functionality and quality, the OPMI LUMERA 700 was able to score with the red dot jury due to its ease of use and longevity. The jury confirmed the opinion of surgeons and doctors from everyday practice: the technology of Stereo Coaxial Illumination (SCI) is innovative and, with its outstanding image quality and stable, bright red reflex, provides cataract surgeons with effective support in their work. The functionality of the RESIGHT fundus viewing system, which displays the back of the eye with superb clarity and detail in retinal surgery, was also highlighted by the jury. In addition to the legendary optical quality associated with the ZEISS brand, the integration of functions enables not only excellent ergonomics and stress-free surgery for the ophthalmologist, but also optimal outcomes for the patient. The integrated keratosope permits visualization of the corneal curvature during the surgery. In addition, OPMI LUMERA 700 adapts automatically to the field of surgery: when the RESIGHT 700 fundus viewing system is moved into position, the Invertertube E and the MediLive Trio Eye video camera immediately switch to the retinal mode. The result for the surgeon: an upright, bright microscope and video image. To support the surgical team, OPMI LUMERA 700 also features an assistant’s microscope and a video camera in HD or SD quality.

OPMI LUMERA 700 outshone competitors’ systems in the contest not least because of its ease of use and user-friendliness. Intuitive and straightforward operation is possible via the touchscreen. By enclosing all potentially obstructive or interfering factors such as cables, the housing is an optimally self-contained unit. This means that the eye of the user is immediately directed to the key controls for the innovative assistance functions and the cleaning process is considerably simplifed. The foot control panel is also operated without cables. To ensure further workflow streamlining in the future, OPMI LUMERA 700 is already equipped for exchanging information with other systems used by the ophthalmologist.
“All products that received the red dot design award had to convince a jury of international experts. These products stand out through their excellent designs and innovativeness and were able to successfully demonstrate their quality in one of the toughest design contests in the world,” says design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the initiator of the red dot design award. Overall, designers and companies from 57 nations took part with a total of 4,252 products in the product design category of this year’s red dot award.
The award ceremony will take place in the Essen Aalto Theater in Germany on July 5, 2010. In Essen, the European Capital of Culture in 2010, OPMI LUMERA 700 will then be presented in a special four-week exhibition in the red dot design museum in the Zollverein coal mine industrial complex.
